"(Ab)normal" Postcard
The simplicity of Bauhaus graphics finds an unexpected match in the spare lines of a fifteenth-century medieval woodcut. Front and centre: a member of the mythological Gegenees tribe of six-armed giants, first described in the 3rd-century Greek epic poem The Argonautica, by Apollonius of Rhodes. These “dread monsters”, residents of the connotatively titled “Mount of Bears”, are “insolent and fierce“, “a great marvel to the neighbours to behold”. As we join the Gegenees’ neighbours to marvel at this postcard design, MxComan asks us to read between the lines. Normality itself is revealed as a myth.
